Mobile accessibility

Tablets and smart phones are now used more than desktop or laptop computers for browsing the Web. As experts in mobile, we can help you make the most of your website or app to reach the growing number of disabled and elderly people using mobile devices.

Mobile audits

Mobile websites are big business. As many customers access your website on mobile devices now as on desktop computers. With the huge increases in accessibility functionality on both iOS and Android devices it is really important to make sure these are as accessible as your desktop website.

The browsing habits from desktop to mobile may change, but your customers don’t. Following the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) isn’t as straightforward for mobile devices: some guidelines aren’t applicable and there are other areas not covered by WCAG that do require checking.

How will an audit help?

We are ideally placed to conduct audits to help you maximise the accessibility and usability of your mobile sites. As with our desktop audits, we will identify any problems and propose solutions.

Following receipt of the audit report, whilst you are making the necessary changes, your consultant will be on hand to support you throughout. Finally we will complete a recheck on the failure points so that you can be confident your mobile website is accessible.

What do you get?

  • Manual testing of 15 pages to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and the BBC’s Mobile Accessibility Guidelines
  • Written report with management executive summary, technical executive summary and screen shots
  • Excel spreadsheet detailing all results from each sample page
  • Follow-up consultancy
  • Recheck of failure points

App audits: iOS, Android, Windows, hybrid apps

Apps are a great way to maintain customer loyalty as well as to offer quick and easy access to your services. Hence, it is important to make sure your app works for everyone.

We combine our expert knowledge of WCAG and in-depth understanding of the BBC mobile guidelines to advise you of any problems your customers may have accessing your services.

How will an audit help?

We don’t just test an app and report on any problems found, we examine the code in detail and, where appropriate, offer code solutions to specific problems, as well as screen shots within your report. We explain why something is a problem for your customers allowing you to create a fully accessible, usable app. We believe in providing our customers the most up-to-date information and expertise in our report.

Our audit process is typically focused on one platform, although we can quote and audit multiple platforms simultaneously.

Development consultancy

Modern mobile operating systems, such as Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, come with innovative assistive technologies pre-installed and provide developers with great tools for making mobile sites and apps accessible. Our accessibility consultants will help you to make the most of these technologies and tools.

How will this help?

Creating any website or application is an investment, so it’s best to get it right from the start. But we can work with you in all stages of development, from reviewing designs and wireframes through to coding and testing specific functionality.

We stay up to date with the latest best practices in accessible mobile website and app development so that we can support you and your developers in the best way possible, saving you further costly development time or potential customer complaints.

What do you get?

Our consultants can either work remotely, sending you mini reports on issues found or, where appropriate, discussing on the phone or via video calling. Alternatively, if remote sharing isn’t an option, we can visit you and review the project onsite in its various stages. Our focus is always on offering solutions, not on what’s wrong.
